Chapter 17 Posted on 2015-11-16 by Javier Melendez

Chapter 17 was focused on automation. During the chapter review with my mentor Luis, we read over the chapter quiz and discussed what was on there. We went over some of the history of how parameters used to be changed before the option of having it automated. We talked about how convenient it is that automation can now be done through the use of software and not manually by multiple people during a recording. We also talked about and applied the different forms of automation available on Pro Tools, such as Read, Touch, Latch, and Write on an open Pro Tools session. After spending a little bit of time discussing the quiz and other points in the chapter, I had the opportunity to apply what I had learned about automation. I started off by creating some automation to pan the vocals left and right on a portion of the track. I used the square wave pencil tool to pan the vocals left and right rapidly for a few seconds. After that, I used the hand tool to create some automation points and raised the levels of the vocals where I created the pan automation, just to exaggerate the effect and bring it out. The final automation that I added, was applying an EQ on one of the sends on the music track, and automating the frequency sweep. I felt it gave it a pretty cool effect to bring the track in. Once I was done experimenting with automations, Luis showed me some ways that those automations I created might sound better or be more effective. Instead of using the square wave pencil tool, Luis highlighted the portion of vocals that I wanted to pan and used the trimmer tool to adjust the automation for that exact portion, and repeated for the few remaining words I wanted to pan left and right. For the level automation he again highlighted to portion he would want to automate and used the trimmer tool to bring the level up or down evenly, without having to create and move automation points independently. Overall, the concept in this chapter was easy to understand. I’ll just have to practice applying these new learned automation principles and skills to become a more efficient audio engineer.
