Chapter 9/Week 9 Posted on 2015-06-01 by Javier Melendez

This week was a more in depth look at the Pro Tools DAW. We went over preferences, plug ins, and more essential keyboard shortcuts. Some examples of keyboard shortcuts we went over: using the accent key or F keys to switch between edit modes, the F keys to switch edit tools, creating new tracks with Shift+Command+N, inserting a break in a clip with Control+B, duplicating a highlighted piece with Command+D, undo with Command+Z and fading between clips using Command F. These shortcuts were very useful the other day, when I was at Audio Mix House using the Pro Tools room they have set up for Recording Connection students to use. It's a simple set up in a small office, with a Pro Tools ready computer and small monitors, but it's a good quiet place to explore Pro Tools or work on an assignment, such as the single cycle 1k tone assignment in Chapter 10. I actually started working on my Chapter 10 assignment while I was in the Pro Tools room, and made good progress. The shortcuts helped me be somewhat efficient with editing, and it was really helpful to apply and practice them while working on a project. I feel a little more comfortable using Pro Tools now.

Another highlight for this week was I finally got my home studio up and running. I ran into some power issues with my Mbox mini earlier in the week, which led me to buy a new audio interface. After some research and a little advice from my mentor, I ended up buying the Scarlett 6i6 by Focusrite. With a total of 6 inputs and 6 outputs (combination of SPDIF, MIDI, 1/4", XLR) this interface should be more than enough to meet my home studio needs for a long time. Now I can work on projects at home as well as in the Pro Tools room at the studio. There's plenty more I have to add to my home studio, but I finally have all the equipment I currently own connected and working together, which is a great feeling. I think the next big step is adding some acoustic treatment to the walls.
